(P.s it’s 3:45am and I’ve been awake since 5:30am yesterday so there may be some typos but I just really wanted to get this scene out of my head.)
Ward had 24 hours to do things his way. After that, it was out of his hands.
To be honest, things seemed much more black and white when he was with his S.O but being back with the team and seeing how worried Skye was for his well-being made his mission harder than he had hoped it would be.
Having spent most of his time being examined by Simmons and explaining his story to the team, Ward was running low on time. He knew that.
He knew, even more so, when Garrett sent in back up.
Deathlok’s entrance was anything but stealthy. The doors blasted open behind Fitzsimmons, throwing them unconscious to the floor.
"You gonna just stand there, or are you gonna get the girl?" He asked the agent standing alone not four feet from where the biochemist and engineer lay.
"I really didn’t wanna have to do this to you, Skye." Garrett pulled a USB key out of his jacket pocket and placed it on the table, "but you leave me no choice. Either you unlock the hard drive willingly, or I make you. The choice is yours."
"Go to hell." She spat in response.
His coy smile sent shivers down her spine. Determined to show no emotions, Skye stared him down, blankly.
"Let’s get started then, shall we?" He signalled the man standing at his side.
The man took three steps forward and wrapped his long fingers around her arms, forcing her backwards.
"Mike," she begged, "please-"
"Mike Peterson can’t hear you. He’s no longer with us, actually." Garrett picked up the USB and slid it into it’s slot. "Get her in the chair."
Within moments, Skye was strapped in to the steel chair facing a black screen.
"Let’s take a look at your file, shall we?"
"There’s nothing on me in those files." She looked him straight in the eye.
"Oh but I know, so very well, in fact." He laughed. "There’s nothing on you in these particular files because your files are much more classified than your average SHIELD agent."
Ward’s eyes rested on her for a moment. Confused.
"Ah," Garrett exclaimed, opening file after file until he finally found it, "we’re in business."
Skye looked down at the floor. Her entire life was on that single file. A file that her, nor Coulson could open before.
They had seen parts of it, of course. A good 95% of it was blacked out and deemed unreadable even to an agent as highly ranked as Coulson, but he had seen some of it. At least enough to have known she was an 0-8-4.
The file pulled up, exposing it’s contents on the screen before her.
Slowly, the screen began to fill with orders given by an unknown, high ranked agent of SHIELD.
Garrett sifted through them, reaching a set of photos.
The first, a baby, wrapped in a light purple blanket. The next photo showed a man, an agent of SHIELD, holding a blood covered baby.
Skye stared in disbelief at the files she had been searching her entire life for. Her breath hitched and she looked away as the third picture covered the screen.
A female agent laying motionless in a pool of blood with a single paged file attached to it.
The file read: “The mission has been compromised. I repeat, our mission is compromised. I don’t know how, all I know is they have found us. It isn’t safe for her here, we have to move her again.”
"Update log 47: 0-8-4 secure, awaiting drop off location."
Her last entry.
"Seems like death has followed you everywhere you’ve gone, hasn’t it?"
Skye ignored his remarks as best she could. She’d be lying if she said it didn’t phase her.
"Saint Augustine’s Orphanage," he read out to her, watching as she attempted to remain calm and collected, "is this bringing back painful memories?"
Ward analyzed the files, looking back at her after every one. He tore his eyes away from her every time his S.O would glance in his direction. Making sure his stance was steady and fierce.
"I’m just gonna move on then," he finally said when she didn’t respond.
The fourth photo had the most impact. The moment it opened, Skye Quickly turned her head away from it. A tear escaped her and streamed down her cheek.
Ward stared at it. Rage built within him and he felt himself losing control.
"Now that’s not a pretty sight," Garrett sang. "Well, I’m not saying you weren’t pretty back then,"
"John." Ward finally spoke.
"Shut it, Grant." He shot back.
"Sorry about that," he walked over to her, "where was I? Oh right, what I meant to say is, all those bruises and cuts, they didn’t really suit you." He brought his hand to her cheek and turned her toward the screen. "Abusive foster daddy?"
"SHUT UP!" She threw her head forward, knocking his hand away from her.
"I think I hit a nerve." He smiled, looking at a stone-faced Ward. "Now, if I’m not mistaken, I believe I saw a few police reports along with some very dark hospital papers. Let’s see if I can find them again." Garrett walked back to the table and scrolled through the files more quickly.
Skye slowed down her breathing. Staring solely at her knees, she fought off the dark emotions that came clawing back.
"Ah, here we are." Garrett pulled up a chair, "here is where things get really messed up."
Losing her fight, Skye tightly shut her eyes and leaned her head down. Her sweaty hands gripped the chairs armrests.
"October 27th, 2008. Says here your foster brother called the cops after finding you unconscious on your bedroom floor having slit your wrist. You have to ask yourself, who are you fighting for? S.H.I.E.L.D? An organization that stood by and watched while your soul was being ripped apart piece by piece, night after night? The people who did nothing while your foster family physically abused you to the point where you wanted to take your own life? I don’t know, that’s pretty messed up to me." Garrett asked, pointing at the screen that finally revealed her dark past.
"Stop it." Ward said through his teeth.
"Have you got something to say?" Garrett challenged. "I guess the two of you have a little more in common than you realized
what if your favorite character knocked on your door at like 3 in the morning drunk as hell asking you to go to taco bell with them would you do it
taco bell doesn’t even exist in this country and i would still do it
THIS WARD BUSINESS IS SO INCREDIBLY UPSETTING I CAN'T EVEN CHEER MYSELF UP BY WATCHING THE EARLIER EPISODES BECAUSE EVERYTHING IS TAINTED. IT'S POISONED. THIS IS THE WORST THING TO EVER HAPPEN.
Do you ever wonder how different Grant’s life would have been had Coulson been the agent who recruited him, not Garrett?
Because I do.
